3 Quick Workouts for Busy Moms to Stay Active in the New Year

3 Quick Workouts for Busy Moms to Stay Active in the New Year

3 quick workouts for busy moms to stay active in the new year. As a single mom of four living in Mexico, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to stay consistent with fitness. Between homeschooling, running a household, and chasing after kids, finding time for yourself can feel impossible. However, I’ve learned that prioritizing movement doesn’t have to be time-consuming or complicated—it’s all about being intentional and making the most of the time you have.

This year, I’ve started back on my weight gain journey, focusing on home workouts and high-protein meals to fuel my body. Staying active is not just about fitness for me—it’s about showing my kids the importance of self-care and creating a foundation of health and strength. If you’re looking for quick, effective ways to stay active, here are three workouts you can do at home, no matter how busy your schedule is.

Full Body Workout (15 Minutes)

This workout hits all the major muscle groups in just 15 minutes. It’s perfect for building strength and burning calories while keeping your kids entertained or occupied nearby.

What You’ll Do:

  • Jumping Jacks (1 minute): A quick cardio burst to warm up.
  • Push-Ups (30 seconds): Modify to your knees if needed.
  • Bodyweight Squats (1 minute): Focus on proper form to protect your knees.
  • Plank Hold (30 seconds): Engage your core and keep your back straight.
  • Rest (30 seconds): Catch your breath and sip some water.

Repeat this circuit 3 times. If your little ones want to join in, let them! My kids love trying to “beat” me during jumping jacks or planks.

High Intensity Tabata (10 Minutes)

If you’re short on time but want to feel the burn, Tabata is your best friend. This high-intensity interval workout alternates 20 seconds of effort with 10 seconds of rest. It’s quick, effective, and leaves no excuses for skipping a workout.

Sample Tabata:

  • Burpees (20 seconds): A full-body move that gets your heart pumping.
  • Rest (10 seconds)
  • Mountain Climbers (20 seconds): Drive your knees toward your chest as quickly as possible.
  • Rest (10 seconds)
  • Jump Squats (20 seconds): Add a little explosiveness to your squat.
  • Rest (10 seconds)
  • Plank Shoulder Taps (20 seconds): Keep your core tight while alternating shoulder taps.
  • Rest (10 seconds)

Repeat the cycle twice for a full 10-minute sweat session.

Pro Tip: Set your kids up with their favorite activity while you knock this out. Even better, get them to join in for a family fitness challenge!

Strength-Focused Resistance Band Workout (20 Minutes)

Resistance bands are lightweight, affordable, and effective for toning muscles. Plus, they’re kid-safe if left lying around!

What You’ll Do:

  • Band Squats (12 reps): Loop the band above your knees to add resistance.
  • Seated Rows (12 reps): Sit on the floor, wrap the band around your feet, and pull the ends toward you like rowing a boat.
  • Bicep Curls (12 reps): Step on the band with both feet and curl the ends toward your shoulders.
  • Lateral Band Walks (10 steps each direction): Keep the band above your knees, squat slightly, and step side to side.

Complete 3 rounds of this workout for a total-body toning session. It’s great for building strength, especially if you’re working toward a weight gain goal like me.

Tips To Stay On Track

Set Realistic Goals: Start small and be consistent. Even 10 minutes a day adds up over time.

Include the Kids: Turn workouts into family bonding time. It’s fun, and they’ll love being part of your fitness journey.

Fuel Your Body: As part of my weight gain journey, I eat high-protein meals daily. Think lean meats, eggs, beans, and protein shakes to support muscle growth and recovery.

Remember You’re Worth it

15 Family Friendly Travel Essentials Every Parent Needs

15 Family-Friendly Travel Essentials Every Parent Needs

15 family friendly travel essentials every parent needs. Traveling with family, especially as a mom balancing multiple roles, can be an exciting but sometimes overwhelming experience. From business travel to family visits, every trip is a chance to create memories, but it does come with its challenges—especially when kids are involved. As a Black content creator who travels frequently with my children between Mexico and the States, I know that preparation makes all the difference. Here are 15 family friendly travel essentials that will help make any family trip smoother, safer, and more enjoyable.

1. Portable Charger/Power Bank

In the digital age, everyone has devices that need to stay charged. From smartphones to tablets used for kids’ entertainment, a reliable portable charger is a lifesaver during long flights, layovers, or road trips.

2. Travel-Friendly First Aid Kit

Accidents and minor health issues can happen anytime. A compact first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, children’s pain reliever, and allergy medications ensures you’re prepared for any bumps along the way.

3. Reusable Water Bottles

Hydration is key when traveling. Refillable water bottles are both eco-friendly and practical, allowing you to refill as needed. Consider bottles with built-in filters, especially if traveling to places with different water quality standards.

4. Comfortable Travel Pillows and Blankets

For long trips, travel pillows and compact blankets bring a touch of comfort, helping little ones nap peacefully and making downtime more enjoyable for everyone.

5. Tablets with Headphones

Entertainment is essential to keep kids engaged during long journeys. Load tablets with movies, educational apps, and games. Be sure to include child-friendly headphones that are comfortable and volume-limited for safe listening.

6. Snacks and Reusable Snack Containers

Traveling can make everyone hungry, and airport or roadside options aren’t always the healthiest. Pack an assortment of snacks in reusable containers for a quick bite that saves time and money.

7. Packing Cubes for Organization

Packing cubes are a game changer for keeping everyone’s clothes and accessories organized. Assign a different color for each family member for easy access and less stress when searching for essentials.

8. Change of Clothes in Carry-On

Always pack a change of clothes for each person in your carry-on. This simple step prepares you for any unexpected delays, spills, or accidents.

9. Collapsible Stroller or Baby Carrier

If you have younger children, a lightweight, collapsible stroller or baby carrier is invaluable for navigating airports, city streets, or attractions with ease.

10. Travel-Sized Toiletries and Baby Wipes

Keep travel-sized toiletries, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, and hand sanitizer, on hand for freshening up during long travel days. Baby wipes are a must-have for cleaning hands, surfaces, and unexpected messes.

11. Reusable Wet/Dry Bags

These versatile bags are great for separating wet swimsuits, soiled clothes, or dirty shoes from the rest of your luggage, keeping everything clean and organized.

12. Travel Document Organizer

Traveling as a family means multiple passports, tickets, and IDs. A travel document organizer keeps everything together, making airport security lines and check-ins hassle-free.

13. Travel Games and Activities

Keep kids entertained with small games, coloring books, stickers, or card games. Activities can be a lifesaver when waiting at airports or during long car rides.

14. Child Safety Gear (GPS Trackers or ID Bracelets)

For added peace of mind, especially in crowded areas, consider child GPS trackers or personalized ID bracelets with your contact information.

15. Sunscreen and Bug Repellent

No matter the destination, protecting your skin is crucial. Family-friendly sunscreen and bug repellent are must-haves for outdoor adventures, keeping everyone safe from sunburns and insect bites.

Focus on Creating Memories

Traveling with family isn’t just about getting from one place to another—it’s about making lasting memories. With these 15 essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for the journey ahead, leaving more room to focus on bonding, exploring, and enjoying every moment with your loved ones. Bon voyage and happy travels!

5 Mindset Shifts for Moms in Business

Five mindset shifts for moms in business. As we step into the final quarter of the year, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and refocus. For moms running businesses, quarter four often brings a unique set of challenges and opportunities. It can be a hectic time—balancing family, business, and holiday plans—but it’s also a chance to finish the year strong.

As a mompreneur slow traveling in Mexico with my children, I’ve learned that mindset is everything. How we approach this last stretch of the year will determine whether we simply coast through or truly maximize our potential. Here are five mindset shifts for moms in business to help you thrive during this final quarter of the year:

Embrace Progress Over Perfection

The pressure to “get it all done” in the last few months can feel overwhelming. But remember, perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Set small, attainable milestones and celebrate each one. Whether it’s launching a new product, building your email list, or simply staying consistent on social media, every step forward is worth celebrating. Let go of the idea that everything needs to be flawless and focus on steady progress.

Prioritize Self-Care to Boost Productivity

It’s easy to neglect self-care when you’re managing both motherhood and business. But here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking time to recharge—whether it’s a 10-minute meditation, a quick workout, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee—will give you the mental clarity and energy you need to tackle your goals. A healthy, rested mind leads to more productive workdays.

Visualize Success and Stay Focused on Your “Why”

With the year-end in sight, it’s crucial to stay connected to your “why.” Why did you start your business? Who are you serving? What legacy are you building for your family? Take time to visualize what success looks like for you in the final quarter. Use this vision as motivation to push through distractions, challenges, and setbacks. When your purpose is clear, staying focused becomes easier.

Practice Gratitude and Celebrate Wins—Big and Small

Gratitude is a powerful mindset shift. Instead of focusing on what’s left to accomplish, take stock of how far you’ve come. Reflect on the wins, both big and small, from the past three quarters. Did you grow your business, Did you learn new skills and Did you maintain a work-life balance? Celebrate these achievements, and let gratitude fuel your drive to finish the year strong.

Set Clear Boundaries to Protect Your Time

As the holiday season approaches, your time will be in high demand. Between family gatherings, holiday shopping, and business deadlines, it’s easy to get stretched thin. Setting clear boundaries around your time is essential for maintaining focus and avoiding burnout. Communicate your availability to clients, set work hours, and carve out time for family. Protecting your time will allow you to stay present in both your business and personal life.

As we enter quarter four, remember that this is your opportunity to create a powerful finish to the year. Focus on your mindset, nurture your well-being, and stay connected to your goals. Let’s make this last quarter our best one yet!

Here’s to a strong and fulfilling finish!

Our Second Year of Homeschooling

Starting Our Second Year of Homeschooling in Mexico

As we embark on our second year of homeschooling, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of excitement and anticipation. This year, I’ll be guiding my first, third, and sixth grader through their educational journey while we continue our slow travels in Mexico. The flexibility of homeschooling has been one of the greatest gifts for our family, and I’m eager to see them grow, both academically and personally.

One of the most important things I’ve learned in this process is that each of my children has unique strengths and weaknesses. As a parent and teacher, it’s my job to provide them with the tools they need to succeed, no matter where their strengths lie. Homeschooling allows me to focus on each child individually, tailoring our lessons to meet their needs.

Tailoring Learning to Their Strengths and Weaknesses

This year, my goal is to focus even more on their individual learning styles. My first grader is curious and loves hands-on activities, so we’ll be incorporating more experiments and interactive lessons to keep her engaged. My third grader thrives on structure, and I’ve learned that clear instructions and a consistent schedule are key to keeping him motivated. Meanwhile, my sixth grader is blossoming in her critical thinking skills and loves a good challenge, so we’ll be diving deeper into more advanced subjects and problem-solving activities.

I’ve found that acknowledging their strengths helps build their confidence, and addressing their weaknesses helps them grow without frustration. Instead of pushing them to conform to a traditional learning mold, homeschooling gives us the freedom to experiment with what works best for each of them.

Educational Field Trips and Extracurricular Activities

This year, we’re also making room for monthly educational field trips. One of the amazing things about living in Mexico is the rich culture and history that surrounds us. Each month, we’ll be visiting museums, cultural landmarks, or nature reserves to bring our lessons to life. These trips will not only provide a break from traditional schooling but also offer real-world learning opportunities that books can’t always provide.

In addition to our educational trips, I’m encouraging each of them to choose an extracurricular activity. Whether it’s art, sports, music, or something else, these activities will help them explore their passions and develop new skills. Giving them the autonomy to choose will allow them to express their creativity and build self-discipline in a fun and engaging way.

The Joy of Learning Together

What excites me most is watching them excel in their own ways. I’m not only their mother but their guide in this journey, and seeing them conquer challenges, learn new things, and gain confidence brings me so much joy. It’s not always easy—balancing their different needs can be tough—but it’s worth every moment to watch them grow.

As we dive into this second year of homeschooling, I’m reminded of how powerful it is to create an environment where learning feels natural and fun. I’m committed to helping my children flourish, both academically and personally, and I’m confident that with the right tools and support, they’ll continue to thrive.

Here’s to another year of growth, discovery, and learning adventures!

Embracing Healing: My Journey to Mental Wellness as a Survivor

Hey there, amazing moms! I’m excited to share with you a deeply personal aspect of my journey—one that has shaped me in profound ways and continues to be a beacon of hope and resilience. In 2018, I made the courageous decision to flee an emotionally and physically abusive relationship, setting forth on a path of healing and self-discovery. Today, I want to delve into why prioritizing healing is crucial for our mental health and why every day presents a new opportunity to focus on our journey toward wellness.

Healing for Mental Wellness: Embracing Self-Love

After experiencing the trauma of abuse, it’s easy to lose sight of our own worth and value. However, through my healing journey, I’ve come to realize that self-love is not only essential but non-negotiable. Every day, I make a conscious effort to show myself kindness, compassion, and understanding. I recognized that I am deserving of love and respect, both from others and from myself.

Healing for Mental Wellness: Breaking the Cycle

One of the most profound realizations I’ve had on my healing journey is the importance of breaking the cycle of abuse—not just for myself, but for my children and future generations. By prioritizing my mental health and well-being, I am creating a ripple effect of healing and empowerment that extends far beyond my own experiences. Every step I take toward healing is a step toward creating a brighter, safer future for myself and my loved ones.

Finding Strength in Vulnerability

Healing is not always easy, and there are moments when the journey feels overwhelming. Equally important, I’ve learned that true strength lies in embracing vulnerability and reaching out for support when needed. Whether it’s seeking therapy, confiding in trusted friends, or engaging in self-care practices, I’ve discovered that there is immense power in acknowledging my own needs and allowing myself to be supported along the way.

To my fellow moms who may be on their own healing journey, I want to remind you that every day is a new opportunity to focus on your well-being and prioritize your mental health. No matter where you are in your journey, know that you are not alone, and there is hope for healing and transformation. Embrace self-love, break the cycle of abuse, find strength in vulnerability, and know that you are deserving of healing and happiness. Together, let’s continue to support and uplift one another as we navigate the beautiful, messy, and ultimately empowering journey of healing.

Join me in prioritizing mental health and self-love with the “Thoughts of a Woman” journal—a powerful tool for reflection and empowerment on your healing journey. Let’s embrace vulnerability, break the cycle of abuse, and find strength together. Get your journal now and embark on a journey of healing and transformation.
